The supra came with the 5MGE motor in American
cars. It's an in-line 6-cylinder motor. They went to
twin-cam in 1982 and it pumped out 145HP. IN the 85-86
models, it had over 160HP.

The problem in it
being the six-banger is that it weighs quite a bit more
than the celica's four-banger, and so even with your
eibach springs, you'd most likely have to change over
again to supra springs and struts, etc. I'm not sure
but I think the supras used a different radiator, and
you'd obviously have to change the computer box over
for the fuel injection.

It's basically a big
pain in the ass. If you really want good power, I'd
suggest getting another car. But on the other hand, the
GT-S is a wonderful handling machine, and you can do
things like intake, exhaust and cam changes to the 22RE
motor that won't totally break the bank.

My 1984
GT-S coupe needs a new head, but that isn't stopping
me from having fun with it. You might want to surf
the net for crate motor companies. You can get a good
rebuilt 22RE (even modified) for under $2000 U.S. dollars
at some places, and with a warranty. The 22RE motor
was used a lot in Toyota trucks, so there's plenty
around.

I'll have my GT-S up and going next summer, and if
things work out, I'll put in a rebuilt later on and then
take it to the track with the Porsche Club. I used to
play with the German stuff.

B.J.R.
