Hi guys, I have a question. I need to replace my radiator for my supra. (88' NA). This is what I am going to do. I will buy a radiator from a store for $149.99(Modine brand)--but the shop over there charge $103.00 for labor. I think that's too much. So, I will take it to another shop, they said that they will charge $50 for labor and takes about 1 or 2 hours. Can any body let me know if I am on the "right" track doing that? or is there any "cheaper" or "easier" way to get my radiator fix. (I think it needs to be replaces personally, because it is leaking and smoke is coming out from it.) Please let me know if anyone has any idea. Thank you very much in advance.

Hey I went to mvpmotorsports.com and they had a good price on an aluminum radiator. It will add about 10 horsepower and cools more efficient than the stock radiator. And for the labor, just do it yourself, it will save you about a hundred dollars. I just took my radiator out today for my problem and it was the easiest part I have done.

seriously man take his advice replacing a radiator is like the easiest thing to do on a car. most aftermarket radiators just slide in using all factory holes and just hook up your tubes when ur done

Just make sure to change the radiator when the car is cold..!!.. When you take the fan shroud off, you have to take off the fan too. Then disconnect the top hose and then the bottom hose; have a bucket to catch the antifreeze/water. Unbolt it and pull it it up and out. Make sure to have the car on jacks when you do this; it will make your work a lot easier and a lot cleaner. Have fun, it is the easiest thing to do.

I'll add my experience:

Be prepared to lose some coolant when you detach the lower rad hose. If it hasn't been removed in a while that hose can be tough to get off, too.

The rad is held in place by two bolt/clip type things on the top and just sits on two pegs with rubber bushings on the bottom.

What I do:

-Drain Coolant
-Jack car up & remove hoses
-Remove the fan shroud(removing the fan is a good idea too, but this can be done with the fan in place)
-Remove the bolt/clip assemblies
-Pull up hard on the rad and it should pop right out of the bushings.

It's super easy.

Check post 498. I just replaced the radiator in my 1986 Turbo and detailed the steps in that post. Radiators are easy to do, just a little messy. Even after you drain it, there may still be some coolant that leaks out when you start moving the radiator around so wear some old clothes.

Remember that coolant is poisonous and since its sweet tasting, animals love to drink it up. If you have dogs or cats, (or even little kids) keep them away or they'll be dead before you know it.

I think you'll find it an easy job. Mine was an automatic so there were a couple of extra hoses on the bottom, but otherwise nothing to worry about. You're looking at 30 minutes or so worth of work.

On your questions, the radiator has a drain cock on the port side at the bottom. First, take off the splash pans on the bottom and you can see everything. If you undo the cock a little, the coolant wll dribble down the drain hose into your catch basin all nice and neat. If you're like me and undo it all the way, it will shoot out and get everywhere. Remember to take off the cap too, that helps the stuff come out faster.

You want about a 50/50 mix of coolant. You can look up the capacity, or have a parts guy do it, where you buy the antifreeze. It should be just about one bottle of antifreeze and an equal amount of water (the bottles in the USA might be bigger, so look it up just in case.)

Don't remove the fan itself. Toyota anticipated this and made the fan shroud in two pieces connected by spring clips. Everything comes away clean without pulling the fan.

Yeah, I can honestly say I've only removed the fan when I was doing a valve job.

But if you've never removed the rad before...it couldn't hurt.

my $.02
