Way back near the beginning of these messages there was comments stating that you could not install ham radios and such, although I think someone eventually did without any problems.
I think I ran into a slight problem along this line today. I usually carry a hand-held scanner (receiver only)with me in the car. Unfortunately, there is no convient place to put it - the dashboard is huge but is too smooth to hold anything, and I usually have the bottle holders full. The only place I can find to put it is to open the door to the CD and place it there. Works fine, except twice, when I got out of the car and left the radio there and turned on, the remote door unlock/lock buttons would not work. My wife's remote did work from about 10 feet away, but only worked occasionally.
Weird. Never heard of a receive only radio affecting anything before.
Tried it again later and had not problems.

Jerry

In fact, all "receive only" radios transmit RF. That's because of the local oscillator inside that is required for tuning. How well that is shielded determines the RF leakage

DH

Why isn't the Prius properly shielded?
Imagine Smokey answering a call on his 120 Watt Motorola 2-way just as he is directly alongside???
Bill Powell

It isn't a matter of the Prius being shielded. It's entirely a matter of the local oscillator inside of the radio receiver you are using being shielded.

After all, if the Prius were shielded, your keychain transmitter would not work.

DH

> It isn't a matter of the Prius being shielded.
Correct - it's a matter of it's electronics being properly shielded: what gets out can also get IN.
Wonder if the Prius would pass FCC Class A or Class B emissions standards?
Bill Powell

I'm guessing not. However, the AM radio seems to be working as well when the car is off as on. That might suggest that the systems are fairly well shielded.

My last car, a 95 Ford Contour, did not fair as well. The AM had problems when the fuel system was running. (I'm not talking about engine whining noise or spark problems). I could actully improve reception because the noise margin seemed to increase a lot. There was this background hush which I attributed one of the processsor clocks getting piped into the system. BTW - it was a factory installed stereo.

DH

On a previous post somebody mentioned turning off the display. This only works if the headlights are on. If they're that close you're toast already.
