Hi all.

I have just moved to Anchorage with my 2007 Toyota RAV4. I really want studded tires, but can't seem to find any manufacturer that makes them in the 225/65/17 size. Do you know if I can substitute another size? Or, would winter tires work just as well? Winter tires do come in the recommended size, but I'm afraid they won't work as well on ice.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give!

Congrats on your RAV, did you get the V6 AWD? I'm not sure about who makes studded tire since they are prohibited by law in some states.

Studded winter tires are not recommended for high speed driving because high speeds (as well as excessive tire spinning) can cause studs to be ejected.

The Blizzak Winter tires get great reviews, you can go to www.tirerack.com. I don't think a studded tire will do much better on ice. Best bet is to buy a good set of winter tires and have them mounted on rims that you don't care about. That way you can swap your all season set for the winter with ease. I found some 16" that would fit your RAV4 fine. Only V6 models come with the 17" std.

Good luck.

I'm a newbie, here, and although I'm posting late into the winter, I'd figure I'd give you my 2 cents...I've been very happy w/ my set of Kumho Stud tires. Here is Massachusetts, they don't allow studded tires, but my tires didn't ahve the studs installed. These tires are great, and I'm into my 4th winter on them. I should get 2 more winters out of them or more. I got them at the tire rack w/ steel wheels balanced/delivered for $375 a few years ago.
