Hi, I have been trying to locate, very unsuccessfully, a rear twin pipe exhaust for my ST183. I have tried all car breakers in Rep. of Ireland and N.I. and have even bought and returned Bosal and Walker rear boxes which they state ,in their manuals, are for the ST182/ST183. Theese boxes are about 5 inches too short to be even considered. Does anyone have any info/suggestions as the car is parked up due to it sounding like a train at the moment! Cheers..........

I have my original one in the garage somewhere though there's only a couple of inches of the original pipe left on it so you'd need to get an exhaust fitter to use their imagination to join it to your pipe.

Hi Al,

I presume you fitted a custom one then?

Am I better to do same, does it include mid exhaust also, and how much am I looking at for that?

When you say there is only a couple of inches left do you mean the flange is not on it any longer?

So many questions!!

Cheers.....

I imported 4 universal back boxes from the states when they were a lot dearer than they are now, took it to my local powerflow place and they cut the original off then welded my one in it's place with a sleeve to cover the join and welded the hangers on to make it fit, cost about ?30 for them to do their bit. They didn't touch the flange cos it would have been harder to do as the flange is on the loop over the rear axle IIRC where as there's enough of a straight bit between the back of the box and the rear axle to connect the replacement box up. The one's i bought were designed for an american V8 so give a nice throaty rumble without being too loud, Car sounds like a wrc corolla on tickover :)

My rear exhaust is ‘snapped’ right at the flange.

This originally came about because I had a European back box welded to fit my Japanese mid exhaust.

So I’d have to do same as yourself AND weld the flange again which is where this problem came about from originally.

I contacted a jap parts place in Rep. and they said they can get me a new one for €500……..and it will be here in 6 weeks!

Last year Kwik Fit charged me ?260 for a middle and rear section. It took them a week to get the rear section which goes up and over the 4WS. They said it was a genuine Toyota part which I thought was pretty good value as their price for a pattern exhaust for the Brit model was ?200.

That was the branch in Four Lane Ends in Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne.

I brought it to a exhaust garage yesterday and they said they’d fit a bosal rear and mid for €313 (£210).  However because it does not fit perfectly, obviously!, they are going to charge me €50 per hour for cutting and welding, if it is worthwhile…………..

Hi Guys I have a custom make exhaust on my gtr, its a single 4 inch straight cut jap style tail end. I got the middle box changed to, but havent gone any further due to the cat. He even modded the rear bit that goes over the axle to go under the axle, thus giving a hell of a lot more flow. The way the pipe shrinks to fit is not a good idea.

Was onto a place in Co. Meath and they said that mid and rear original new parts will cost ?1000(675) to ship from Japan. Because I can't get anyone to make up the pipe needed on the cheap, I have booked it in for a full system (mid and rear) to a powerflow specialist. This is gonna cost me ?650(?439). He said I'd have to get the mid done aswell, it does have a hole in it!, because it is only mild steel and against a new stainless steel back it would rot in no time.

My problem was I let them put on a ‘European’ back box on about 2 years ago.  This means I lost the rear pipe that goes over the axle as they just dumped it.  If only I knew the hassles it would cause.  So I need to get an original part with this pipe included or bring it to some motor engineering place with a good mig welder, as the local qwik fit guys won’t take on the job of making the new pipe.  They say there is not enough room to work because of the 4ws.  I am waiting on a price for original parts from JapAutos in Co. Meath and if anyone can get the parts they can as they are the ones that sourced and fixed the notorious 4ws sensor problem.

Stephen,

Can you get the original ST183 mid and rear exhaust or the powerflow ones?

Regards…….

Hi, Eventually got my exhaust sorted. Brought it to a Powerflow dealer and got a stainless steel system from the cat back. It cost me ?445 pounds. I am very happy with the work done but it was a bit pricy. The noise however is fantastic. A real deep hum not dissimilar to a Scooby. It also seems to pick up in the low range a little faster. Thanks for the comments and replies Regards????
