On a '90 4runner with 22RE and 5 speed, at 170,000 the truck is still in great shape, super clean and runs, drives great. Two previous owners were middle aged women that didn't off-road. The only problem is an oil leak. It is the only leak on the truck. I believe it is leaking from the rear main oil seal on the engine. Pan gasket area is dry and bolts are tight. Oil mainly around the clutch housing just in front of the tranny and oil appears to leak from the rubber boot where the clutch actuator enters the housing. I'm going to have a mechanic check it out. If I'm right and it is a rear main oil seal, the transmission has to be dropped to replace the seal. My questions are: Clutch works perfectly now, but, since they have to drop tranny for oil seal job, I think I'll have the clutch replaced as it might be less costly just to do it at 170K miles now rather than wait for a problem with the clutch. How long should I expect the transmission to last before it needs rebuilt. It seems perfect now, so I think I'll leave it alone. Does this sound right? How much should a main oil seal job cost? How much for clutch replacement, esp. is I get them both done at the same time, should save a little?

these trucks leak a little take it to the car wash buy a bottle of degreaser spray under the truck let it set for 5min the powerwash off then look where the oil is coming from, a main seal is a lot of money to replace you have to remove the motor its a BIG JOB =BIG$$$$$$$ its over 10 years old its goin to leak alittle mine leaks i just keep an eye on the levels >

I just replaced my clutch last year in my 1985 4Runner...by dropping the tranny...it is cast iron...the transfer case is attached to it AND....the front and rear propeller shafts stay partially assembled when you drop it....POINT...it is one heavy SOB. And, it takes a LONNNNGGG time. So, if you go with this, do the clutch. As far as the oil leak goes, let it leak...kitty litter on the driveway and a case of Quakerstate are a lot cheaper than a rear main seal job...' Mine leaks all over the tranny case and actuator boot also. So does my Isuzu Trooper....it leaks too. Just keep oil in it. PLUS there are no gurantees that IF YOU REPLACE the rear main seal you'll nail the oil leak problem. Good Luck
