Does anyone know if this needs to be filled with power steering fluid? I have been told sooo many different things about the 4 wheel steering mechanism and im confused. One bloke says it needs grease, next bloke says it gets sucked from the front resorvoir, next bloke says to take of the cover and fill the bstd with fluid!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can anyone accurately tell me or is it beyond the knowledge of you people? Cheers!!!

I vote for grease, in 7 years on the list no-one has ever mentioned topping up or replacing fluid in the box. >

Grease the moving bits, and that's it.
The power steering system is all under the bonnet. The power to steer the rear wheels is supplied mechanically via the front-to-rear shaft, there is no fluid feed from the front system. The electric motors do the stuff to make you smile.

It works like this. The shaft always turns the rear wheels in the opposite direction to the fronts (low speed mode). One of the motors on the rear box will compensate for this and steer the rears in the same direction as the fronts when you go over 48kph (about 30mph), which improves high speed stability. The other motor sets the rears straight if you choose the 'Reverse 2WS' option.

Hope this helps...

That helps a lot thanks guys for the information!!! Just one more little thing, does that mean to grease the moving parts I need to take apart the box itself? If so, how do I go about doing that? There are a few screws and I dont want to take out a moving mechanism part and need a special tool to put it back together!!!! Thanks again for the help!! Mike

If you haven't had the whole thing apart then as long as there are no problems with the bits you haven't touched then just leave it be.
Grease any moving bits you can see and put it back together. Don't be too frugal on the grease either, putting loads on is never a bad thing.

Of any bits you haven't taken off - if it ain't broke...

You're welcome. I know what you mean about having bother with these things. Not many people seem willing to help, and those that are tend not to know much anyway. Just as well there are forums like these.

Good luck!
