My 1998 4runner's rear window wont move. The defrost is also not working. Has this happened to anyone? if so...is there a solution.

Yes. I am right in the middle of the same problem.

I have a 1992 4Runner, and I am almost finished replacing the entire tailgate. The only old part is the glass.

The lift-mechanism gets corroded and seizes. Also, the window motor loses strength over time.

If your tailgate is not rusted through, then simple replacing your motor is quite do-able. You won't know what needs to be replaced until you get into the job but here are the components:
-lift mechanism $200
-rails (that clamp the window) + rubber: $50
-motor $400

My suggestion in order to get the window down is buy a window suction cup from an automotive supplier. Whilst turning the key to make the window go down, pull down on the suction cup and force the mechanism along.

If this doesn't work, you will have to go at it from the inside (that will suck) as you will be sitting cross-legged in the back un-screwing the interior panel of the tailgate. Bring a couple of beers (or an entire case if you're American....weak beer.....ROFL !).

If you want to discuss separately, you can PM on these forums, or email me at: pongo@silentrangers.com

I'd rather force the window up and never mess with it again. I just want for it to close...i do not need to open it ever again. I'll just buy the suction cup.

If you've recently experienced a heavy "jar" to the tailgait.....ie....if the gate was down and some big fat guy sat on it, or you dropped a heavy object onto it...then the window may have been slightly pinched. This easily creates more drag that the motor cannot overcome.

Just a thought....its happened to me. You can pry the sheet metal apart again. Toyota's are...afterall...simply aluminium.
