Heck, sorry to hear of your loss there Pard... that's not nice news.
Just one thing I'd like some more info on, how exactly did you have the timing advanced on the 3L ?
Injector timing as I understand it is fixed by the injector pump and the position of the drive pulley in relationship to the camshaft [via the timing belt].
The only adjustment I am aware of on the pump is the fuel delivery - lean or rich or somewhere in between.
As a footnote for anyone who has a Hiace with limited slip diff in it (esp. 4X4) be wary of loose metal on roads, soft surfaces such as mud and grass - particularly when coming up to corners.
As you come up to the corner the normal thing is to slow into the corner and accelerate out of it. This I did, but halfway through the corner, at the point I accelerated, I hit a soft patch on the track [this was a bush access track] and with the resulting applied power, one wheel started to spin.
The function of a limited slip diff is to lock both wheels when one starts to spin - which my diff did - and with both rear wheels driving, you tend to lose any ability to turn! Result was I went straight ahead instead of turning the corner and slid sideways down into a culvert.
No damage to the van or myself, just impossible to get out as the running gear was now sitting hard on the ground.
For Ogie, don't waste your time trying to fit a turbo engine into your non-turbo van.
The 3L has mechanical injection - the 1KZ-TE (3 litre turbo) has electronic injection and requires a computer and a heap of sensors and other junk which your van won't have. In short, you need to do a complete wiring loom change and spend hours on a project that will return you very little.
Stick with replacing the 3L, then sell your van and buy a turbo one ready to go.
