I live in Calgary, Alberta and am looking for a used replacement engine for my 1990 Hiace. Preferably a 3L or the newer 3 liter turbo. Does anyone know of a good source for used Hiace engines? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'd be willing to bet John @ rockymountainimports.net can get you a very good deal on a used one from Japan - what ever you want.

He's a great parts supplier...just have to pester him a bit as he's pretty busy.

Whats buggered on it? Anything salvagable? Why do you need a complete replacement?

I have a Hiace that was just rolled in Edmonton. Still in process with the insurance. But if you can give me a bit more for it than the insurance will dock me to hang onto it, then you could pull the engine and the enlarged exhaust. The engine had injectors rebuilt 25000 km ago, timing advanced a couple thousand ago, which made a big difference in power, two new alternator belts, run on synthetic for the last 25 k km. The engine has 142k km on it. It's a 3-L, in good shape.

PArd - What Happened Man?!

I mean OK your van rolled which really sucks - but can you tell us if there is something we should avoid specifically? Rain? 4x4ing? Gravel? Body roll?

I hope you're OK - and make out OK with insurance...

I wasn't in the van when it happened. It was on a gravel highway between Red Earth Creek and Trout Lake. they were going fine, and then they hit a frost melt - sudden deep mud, very treacherous, hard to see coming. Everyone wearing a belt was OK, if very shaken. One fellow had apparently taken his belt off to fish his ipod out from under the seats just before they rolled, and he is in worse shape - a broken neck, but he is walking. So my damage is mental and financial, mostly on account of the performances we won't be doing now. As I wasn't driving I can't say whether any peculiarities of the Hiace had anything to do with it. However, I will say that I will drive more slowly in any vehicle on northern gravel roads now, especially at this time of year.

Heck, sorry to hear of your loss there Pard... that's not nice news.

Just one thing I'd like some more info on, how exactly did you have the timing advanced on the 3L ?

Injector timing as I understand it is fixed by the injector pump and the position of the drive pulley in relationship to the camshaft [via the timing belt].

The only adjustment I am aware of on the pump is the fuel delivery - lean or rich or somewhere in between.

As a footnote for anyone who has a Hiace with limited slip diff in it (esp. 4X4) be wary of loose metal on roads, soft surfaces such as mud and grass - particularly when coming up to corners.

As you come up to the corner the normal thing is to slow into the corner and accelerate out of it.
This I did, but halfway through the corner, at the point I accelerated, I hit a soft patch on the track [this was a bush access track] and with the resulting applied power, one wheel started to spin.

The function of a limited slip diff is to lock both wheels when one starts to spin - which my diff did - and with both rear wheels driving, you tend to lose any ability to turn!
Result was I went straight ahead instead of turning the corner and slid sideways down into a culvert.

No damage to the van or myself, just impossible to get out as the running gear was now sitting hard on the ground.

For Ogie, don't waste your time trying to fit a turbo engine into your non-turbo van.

The 3L has mechanical injection - the 1KZ-TE (3 litre turbo) has electronic injection and requires a computer and a heap of sensors and other junk which your van won't have.
In short, you need to do a complete wiring loom change and spend hours on a project that will return you very little.

Stick with replacing the 3L, then sell your van and buy a turbo one ready to go.

Thanks for the condolence. I didn't advance the injection timing myself, the guy at Pro-active auto in Calgary did it. Not sure of the procedure - but what I recall reading the 3l manual it was not necessary to touch the timing belt. Could be wrong, will look it up when I next have it in hand.

BTW insurance is offering me 10.5 K w/o salvage, which i figure is reasonable as I got it for 13.6 (including 1K worth of rack and box) 24,000 km ago. I've never written off a van before. Does this seem reasonable to you guys?

I know you sank lots of $ into it - but 10.5 I'd take. Bargain for 11? - have a look what they are selling for in Vancouver or in the BuyandSell - I would guess around 10-12 simialr to Delicas. The used car market has softened a lot in the past few months...

Thank, I've decided to take 10.5.

Cheers,
