Does the timing chain on a 3RZ-FE ever need to be replaced under normal operating conditions? 176,000 mi. regularly maintained.

Nope, timing chain never needs to be changed out at regular intervals like the V6 5vz-fe which has a timing belt.

OK, I'm a newbie to Toyota trucks... does my 2008 4.OL V-6 have a timing belt or a timing chain?

All 2005+ Tacos whether V6 or I4 have the timing chain so it never needs to be replaced. 95.5-04 I4 have chains while the V6 has the belt.
