Hello All - I'm a new member here and am asking for some help. I'm military deployed overseas and last week was told that some morons went through my neighborhood with a BB gun and shot at a number of cars. They took out the back glass on my Celica during this "fun." So I'm trying to gather what info I can for when I go home in a couple weeks so that I can try to install a new glass during the time I have off before going back to work. Years back I changed a couple windshields in cars with buddies so I'm somewhat familiar with that but I haven't dealt with a back glass before. Can anyone offer any advice or tips? Since I don't have the car in front of me I can only go by memory but it seems that there was a lip around the glass, and from looking around on line I've found references to some back glass having a "gasket" that seals up around the frame and the glass. Recommendations for getting this rubber gasket to seal properly sounds like a nylon rope inserted into the channel and then pulled out afterwards to get the lip to pop out. I'm hoping someone out there has messed with this before and knows what steps to use. This is a 1989 Celica ST coupe (not hatchback). Also, looking at salvage yard listings, they note back glasses having either "HD" (guessing for Heavy Duty) defroster or regular....how does one tell the difference?
Of course, maybe I'm lucky with this and all I'll have to do is clean out the frame, spread some sealent and drop the glass down (much like windshields in the cars I messed with in my younger days)....if this is the good news someone please tell me. :)
I appreciate any comments to help me along on this.
