Hi everybody:
I have a 99 Rav 4 witha running problem. It has a 2.0l with the auto trans.
The problem is that it loses power. It feels like a fuel problem to me. it idles ok
but stumbles and stutters between 1000 rpm thru 2500rpm. you can get it over
3000 rpm by feathering the accelerater, once above 3000 rpm it revs fine. It lasts
for about 2-3 mins. when it acts up. Does it once a day any other time it runs perfect
thru all rpm ranges. Does not matter hot or cold. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for any help, Paul

You might have two problems, make that three. An electrical problem or a fuel problem. Or even a contaminated fuel problem Lets look at these one by one.

You might have a short cut some where in the electrical system. Do you wash your engine bay a lot? Get a scanner from any Pep Boys. It's about 60 to 90 bucks, but it will tell you about any problem it might have. It comes with a book and a CD. When it reads the codes, each code has a number, look it up in the booklet or on the CD ROM. It will save you a lot of money in the long run. It's connected to an outlet under the dash. It's very close to your right knee. Plug it in, with the switch in the on position but DO NOT ignite the engine, leave it with all the lights on in the dash board. push the switch on the scanner and wait for it to read.

Regarding the fuel, check the lines and filters. I'd advice a Toyota Dealer. Once again, the scanner might tell you the problem.

The third problem, contaminated Gas. Check where you buy your gas. The tanks might be old and corroded. If you live in an area that has been recently flooded some garage owners have to get rid of contaminated gas.

Hope this helps.

Contaminated gas is a good suggestion to think about. I've run into it here from time to time, and have found that if I add a quart of additive, it sorts it. Then, I avoid that station for a while lol.

You need to run some tests, but obviously it has a lot to do with electrical failure in the system.

93,000 miles just had new injectors, common rail and fuel tank to cure running problem.

Symptoms were total loss of power after brief period of overrun. If lucky power returned after a few seconds, if unlucky necessary to pull over and build up from fresh start trying to keep the revs above 3000. Until next period of overrun and it would all start agian. This went from brief hesitation to undriveable in approx 1500 miles.

Early symptoms were hesitation feeling a little as if the turbo was lagging. Even earlier symptoms were evident when accelerating hard in second, going up to approx. 4000 revs, changing up to third the engine would not pick up for a few seconds.

Throughout these troubles idle was always normal.

It was explained to me that a lead based fuel tank lining was failing causing contamination in the injectors. Hence the change of the fuel tank.

I have to say the dealership was brilliant throughout, easy for me to say when the lease company picked up the bill.
