I have a 2009 Tacoma 4WD. On a friend's recommendation I just bought two Blizzak snow tires for the rear tires to deal with the winter conditions here in Wyoming. Shortly after putting them on, several folks commented on how having different tires in the front versus rear will mess up my transfer case. Does anyone have any opinion, advice and/or experience with this? Will this screw up my transmission? Is it okay as long as I'm not in 4WD? Or is it not a big deal.

Thanks!

I would put the same tires on all four wheels because the diameter of the different tires could be different and then that would mess up the transfer case.

It would only matter if your running it in 4wd on dry pavement alot. As long as they are the same size as the front it shouldn't be an issue really and differences between brands shouldn't effect it too much but there are some that do differ a bit too much for my liking. But save up and get them for the front too because what's the point of going forward if you can't steer?

But on the subject of winter driving it this reminds me of a story. My friends were helping some women they found stuck up in the snow on a "Empowerment outing". One was driving a hybrid highlander. One of my friends is racking the shifter back and forth from Reverse to Drive to try and rock it out. He looks at my other friend who works as a dealership mechanic and asks "Am I going to hurt anything doing this?" He responds "No Gabe, it's alot smarter than you" . Moral is alot of these new trucks will not let you damage them. Not saying you can't but it's really hard to.
