I've never had that problem. I'm like you though, not very mechanically inclined. I would probably just take it in and have it looked at by someone less likely to ruin stuff.

My first guess would be a fuse. My fuses seem to control everything and like my house it takes a magician to figure out which one controls what and why.

It could be a few things...most likely something with loose wires as mentioned above...however, for both to go dead is unusual...take it to a local shop!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but... I just got this problem fixed by a mechanic (I'm not mechanical either). I have a 2000 Camry LE and was informed by the mechanic that it is a problem with a component that controls both the speedometer and odometer. This component is used by most Toytota models (including the 4-runner and trucks), as well as Lexus and some other makes like Volkswagen.
Almost $600 later, the bad news is that the manufacturer does not know if the problem occurs within the component itself or in the wiring leading into/out of the component. The really bad news is that the part is on national backorder since the manufacturer will not produce the part until the problem has been found and fixed. I live in Houston and my mechanic had to have a used part overnighted from Michigan. Even with a "new" used part, there is no guarantee that it will fix the problem since the problem still exists. In my case, my fix only lasted a few days and I noticed my odometer is already fluctuating but the speedometer is still working. The mechanic has a sneaky suspicion that they will not produce the part since it only affects cars that are older than 4 years. Good luck!

Forgive the out of the blue response - but my 2000 Camry (bought used last June) has been in the shop for weeks now because of "electrical problems".
Back in October, the speedometer, tachometer and odometer stopped working entirely. My A/C had stopped also, and a bad blower resistor motor seemed to be the problem (the wires were burnt - I still have it).
Well, a few weeks ago, those three meters went out again. Then the radio cut out and the digital clock started to fade in and out. In the end, it drained the battery and it's been in the shop ever since and the mechanic can't seem to find what exactly is blowing the fuses.
I'm just curious about the specifics about what they determined with your car or if you've heard anything since...thanks!
