Hey Everybody!

Does anyone here experience a squealing noise when coasting and accelerating at about 40-50 mph? The sound seems to be coming from the rear tire of the driver side. It happens once in a while. I have had Toyota mechanics take a look but they saw nothing wrong. The sound is really annoying though, it is pretty loud and high pitched. Please help!

This appears to be an old thread, but I came on here for the same/similar issue.

I believe my driver's side axle bearing is going out, as it makes a "chirp-chirp" sound with each revolution of the wheel. It's exacerbated by loading the truck or making right turns.

Auto parts store quotes $85 for the bearing, plus another $15 for inner and outer seals.
Dealer quotes $65 for the bearing and another $35 for seals (and O-ring?)
Service department quotes 2 hrs labor (at $120/hr, yowza!), plus parts (above plus oil and maybe a housing washout)

The image below gives an idea of what's involved. I'm still thinking whether to do it myself or let a shop do it...

Yeah you need to check your breaks. you may need to get new break shoes.

Before you do anything to your rear bearings....jack up your left rear, and grab your tire and wiggle.

If there's movement you need to replace your bearing.

Another check is after you've been driving (with little or no braking) stop and put your hand against the center hub and feel if there's alot of heat...again bearing.

Bearing is simple to replace.

Else, it's your brake shoes rubbing on the drum. Remove your drum and use brake-cleaner and spray the **** out of it to clean.

I came in here looking for any information anybody might have on a very similarly described noise coming from my '04 Tacoma. It's kind of a chirping sound coming from what appears to be either under the truck or in the rear area, only while accelerating though, never when in neutral (manual trans) or braking and never when pulling off the line. Again, it's only when in gear and with foot on the gas. It does not sound like a drive joint going bad. I called my mechanic who seems to think (in my case) that it's a dry clutch-release-bearing. He says it's nothing to worry about right now but my truck only has 36k on it so I'm taking in next week anyway. And yes, it's getting louder. If anyone else has had a similar experience or sound coming from their pre-2005 Tacoma, I would appreciate the feedback. - cactushead

UPDATE: Took the truck into my mechanic, he lbed up the release-bearing - no more noise.

I had the same problem with my 99 tacoma. A high pitched squeeking noise that came and went. Turns out my driveshaft was cracked. The mechanics had to take the whole thing off and send it out to a specialists. I don't know if you have the same problem, but mine cost me about 500.00 to fix. My truck is a four wheel drive and I think I cracked something while on a rock.

I've experienced that too. Thanks for that really great advice. I needed to find that out.

For what it's worth, I finally figured out what my problem was, and believe it or not, it was the hubcap rubbing on either the wheel or the valve stem. For some reason, the hubcap on only that wheel tends to slowly rotate while driving until it gets the valve stem captured under the hubcap. With each roatation, it makes a chirping/scratching sound that is exacerbated when the truck is more heavily loaded. I still can't figure out what exactly is causing the hubcap to rotate, but I do know that it's nothing serious.
