Hi. I am from Dominican Rep. and this is my opinion and experience about the Toyota Starlet:

I think Toyota starlets are the best cars Toyota have made, for it's reliance and durability. Also have very good fuel economy, very good handling, good acceleration and top speed, and is quite comfortable by the type of car Starlet is.
I am from Dominican Republic and I have a 1993 Starlet XL (EP80). When my aunt bought it (new) it came with the 999cc 12valve carbureted 1E Engine (won't pass 145km/h) but since she gave the car to me (with 162.000km) I changed the engine to the 1295cc 12 valve 2E (The same as yours but carbureted) because the car was very bad treated and with poor mantainance, was burning too much oil, the cylynder head was corroded(because the use of water instead of coolant) and the a/c compressor was very noisy and did not work properly.
Because in my country used car parts are very cheap (imported from Japan and USA) The engine costed about 500 USD and I paid another 100 USD to the mechanic who changed it. I used the same transmission (5 speed).
Now it reaches 170 km/h (I have put the car at this speed only three times on the highway because i'm afraid of doing it) and is very stable on highways. Also is very resistant and a bit higher than other cars, good for rural and bumpy roads.
In the city it gives 40km per gallon or 25MPG (like a 2007 Skoda Fabia or VW Polo!) and 65 km per gallon (40MPG) on the highway at 100 km/h.
In my house there is also a 1999 Honda Civic 1.4iS, a 1994 Toyota Corolla DX Station 1.8 and a Citroen Saxo 1.5 Diesel. If you Want to ask me some about this car, don't doubt to ask to me...
