Hi All,

I've posted this question in another post, but thought it might need it's own. Does anyone know whether there is a hand pump to prime the injector pump in the 3L (2.8L) engine? My van is a 92 LH-119 and the pump is out of fuel (though there is plenty in the tank) due to a leak in the injector pump seal. After diagnosing that problem, I'm trying to take it to a mechanic to fix the pump but it must have sat for too long (over a week) and I can't get it going.

I've tried charging the battery right up and cranking it over for quite a while but it won't seem to go. I'm concerned about burning out the starter motor. I have had a pretty good look for a hand pump and can't seem to find it, and the 3L engine manual doesn't seem to talk about it in the section regarding pulling out and re-sealing the injector pump.

Would spraying a bit of ether down the intake be a good idea? I've heard conflicting things about that and would like to hear from someone with some experience in this.

One other possibility, is would the gradient of my driveway cause problems with starting? It slopes up so that the front wheels are approximately 30cm higher than the rear. Up until now it's always run perfectly. The engine is in nearly perfect nic, and has only 95,000km on it.

Thanks very much for your assistance.

OK, so I found the hand pump. Perhaps I was looking too hard, as it was right under my nose. The big huge black button on top of the fuel filter.

Anyway I still can't get it going. Any thoughts?
Cheers

the only diesel I've had also had a nut/bolt to undo to let the air out while you pump the hand pump... once you see fuel coming out tighten the nut/bolt and she goes straight away.... this was an isuzu 2.8TD but I'd imagine toyota diesels would be something similar..... hope this helps

hi there should be a primer diaframe on the fuel filter ,failing that ,pull the hose off where it goes to the injectors fill up this hose with diesel and reconnect hose, try starting the vehicle, if it starts and dies do the same again once it starts the pump will prime itself, be careful that you dont spill fuel in the engine compartment(fire hazard)

Success! Got it going. None of the tips were working as the hand pump didn't have pressure to prime. It was difficult to judge whether the hand pump was working as the stroke is only about 4mm. I tried filling the line between the filter and the pump, and that didn't work either.

The trick was to unbolt the housing for the fuel filter and turn the whole thing right upside down. There is a little draining screw (plastic) on the bottom, which I undid, and carefully poured enough fuel (siphoned from the tank) through the opening to fill the fuel filter to the top. Then the pump seemed to get a little more firm, which told me it was actually working. About 10 or 15 seconds of cranking and it sputtered and smoked to life. It only ran poorly for 30 seconds or so, and then it was back to its old self - purring nicely.

Thanks everyone for the help. This forum is great.
