Hey all,
I'm in the market for another carb - either new or rebuilt, even if it means rebuilding the current one. Have any of you rebuilt your carb? What would you suggest - look for a new one or rebuild the existing one? And if it's 'new one' - then what manufacturer would you recommend?

Mine's frozen, basically. Can't adjust the mixture, the pump arm doesn't move and the level's too high. Curious to see what everyone has, if it isn't original

Peace,
Jake

Hi Jake,

send your carb to Jim Chenowith (sp?) at TLC Performance. He'll make it run better than you could have ever thought possible. He is by far, hands down, the best guy to have rebuild a Land Cruiser carb.

889 Layne Dr.
Lancaster, OH 43130-9736
(614)862-2604
FJ40jim@...

Later,

-ben

Ben -

Oops, sorry about that last one.

I did talk to Jim - it seems like he is the ultimate carb dude. I'm going to give rebuilding it myself a shot first, but Jim is definitely my bail-out. :) Looks like this weekend - I've got an exhaust/intake manifold gasket to do, so might as well yank it all at once.

Thanks!
Jake

Jake,

Glad I could be of assistance. Although I haven't had any work done by Jim (i'm currently running a Chev 350), i hear nothing but rave reviews from people I do know that have sent their carbs into him. Apparently he works some kind of magic that makes the stock carbs run better than the Weber. That's just what I've heard. Good luck with the rebuild!

-ben

Ben -
Managed to get through the rebuild just great! While the carb was off I put a new manifold gasket on as well - the old one was shot. I wouldn't be surprised if it was the original. Anyway, the carb had had some previous work done - and they had flipped linkages upside down and all sorts of stuff. It was a MESS. Just need some tuning and I'm all set with it - it rocks now - what an unbelievable difference.

Now it sounds like I need to spend some time on the valves & lifters - I can hear some clatter coming from cylinders 5 & 6 it sounds like. Are they adjustable on a '72 FJ40 F engine, anyone know?

FYI - anyone else thinking of rebuilding their carb, I heard from MANY people that Jim Chenoweth in Ohio is The Man To See. He said he'd also set the carb with vaccuum advance, instead of the standard vaccumm-retard: this would require a new distributor, as well. This is the way to go, from what I understand, too. But being stubborn, I stuck with the stock formation for now.

Peace,
Jake

hey Jake,
I thought I responded to this awhile back, but it never posted apperently. Anyway, I'm glad to hear that your carb re-build went well. From what I hear (my truck has a chev 350) the valves need to be adjusted quite frequently on the F motors. If you are interested I have (somewhere) a very detailed instruction sheet on how exactly to do the valves written up by a guy I know who was a Land Cruiser specialist at a Toyota dealership some years ago and is now the lead tech at a Lexus dealership. If you are interested I could try to trck it down and post it up here. let me know. Take care,

-ben

Ben -
That'd be excellent! With a new manifold gasket & rebuilt carb it runs a lot smoother, but now I can really tell there's something amiss in the valve head, so that's my next project to tackle (clutch come winter; brakes come spring). Any info you have would be *greatly* appreciated!

Thanks!
Jake
