I just purchased a 94 puckup w/ 22re. It's a great little truck. However, my idle is surging (hi - low - hi - low, etc) ONLY when the AC compressor is on. When the AC button is engaged, the idle will start surging, but then when I hear the compressor cycle off, back to a smooth, normal idle. When the AC is off, it idles perfectly. I'd ASSUME there must be a module that is supposed to increase the idle when the AC is on, and that is now malfunctioning. Have not gotten a chance to get a factory service maunal, and I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance,
Tom

I am not sure how it works on the 22r, but on my 3vz, it has a bunch of vacuum tubes and an electronic solenoid that click on to pass air around the throttle body and raise the RPM. I am guessing you have a cracked or mis connected hose. The FSM will show how they all should connect if you can't find anything obvious.

I've got a 22R and AC, does pretty much the same thing, even with my "crude" carb.
I chalk it up to normal operation, since when the AC kicks on, the idle always kicks up.

ive got a 93 22re and same thing, it surges only when the a/c is on and i am applying the brake so i wonder if it isnt a vacuum issue. i mean the booster takes up a significant amount of vacuum, but if im stopped and i let off the brake it idles normal, no surge at all.

remove the glove compartment assembly entirely fron the dash and you will find a control up towards the center of the dash that will have a ajustment for ac engine speed. play with it untill you are satisfied with your engine speed with the ac on. The control is marked slower--faster, just turn it with your fingers

My '85 4Runner did the same thing. When the a/c compressor was on, the idle would come up and then when the compressor would cycle off the idle would drop.
I personally wouldnt worry too much about it...

Idle surging with the AC on is one thing.

Another cause of "idle surging" on a 22RE is having the idle set too high to begin with.

My '94 Pickup 22RE has the same problem. I spoke to a Toyota service rep and he told me that it was because the base idle was set too high. The fix: let the engine warm up, adjust the base idle to 800 rpm, turn the a/c on, adjust the a/c idle to 925 rpm. Simple as that. I will post my results as soon as I get around to making the adjustment.
