Hello - Just had the pleasure of buying my first ever pickup truck (Tacoma SR5 passenger cab) and a long-awaited RV my wife and I have been saving for. So...we have the Tacoma towing package, bought the best stabilizer and hitch package available through our RV dealer, and we're ready to go with our Jacyo JayFeather Sport (21'). It's small, but just right for us.
At any rate, I still wonder if I'm OK to climb mountain roads, pulling the RV behind my Tacoma. The Tacoma's towing capacity is 6500 lbs. Dry weight on the Jacyo is 3800 lbs., and we're careful not to add too much weight with what we carry in the camper. We may add 250 to 300 lbs. with water in the holding tank and miscellaneous items inside the RV. But still, as I'm climbing a steep hill, I wonder about the wear and tear on the transmission.
Any towing tips from experienced Tacoma owners who tow RV's or boats would be appreciated.
It's good to see all these posts from others sharing ideas and experiences. Even with the soaring gas prices, I'm glad I bought the Tacoma. I use a 94 Geo Prizm (Corolla) for running around in town, and try to limit mileage in the truck. But this Tacoma is a dream to drive. Having fun. Hope you all are as well.
Along with posts on this topic, I would welcome email at kq4cast@aol.com from anyone - especially anyone with RV travel trailer towing experience.
