I have a 95 with the same problem. I called the dealer and they wanted $70.00 for a new replacement. And then an additional $15. to have it keyed to my original keys. I called a locksmith his price wasn't much better. He told me that most times the lock jams up with gunk. The dry graphite that people use to lubricate catches the dirt and then clogs the pins. I lowered the window using the interior button and opened the Tailgate. I removed the panels and then put the tailgate back up. Then raise the window back up. This will give you access to the lock cylinder. There is a clamp that slides to the left to release the lock. Take note on the position of the wires. Remove the lock and start soaking it in brake cleaner (or a cleaner of that type) It took me about an hour and a half to finally work it free. When it started to show signs of movement, I kept working it with the key and resoaking it. I used a paper clip to work any visible dirt and gunk. Finally it started to turn normally i then used marvel mystery oil to make it turn smoothly again. So far its been working great for two months. Good luck Ken

I had a similar problem with the ignition lock. it jammed and refused to start the car. I had to get out the autoclub as I had no tools. who took the lock off. only took 5 mins so fit an imobiliser. The lock it seemed had jammed due to excessive key wear 95,000 miles so the rekeyed the lock. so check for key wear. ie try the key on the doors and not the blip. your problem may be electrical ( does the key turn) if it does can you open the back window with the internal switch? if not its probably wiring problem. if you can check the switch on the back. you may also find that the window lock button on the door may effect the back lock it does from the inside ( would check but cant be bothered to go out in the rain and its summer here) its not an expensive job to put right what ever way you do it. so buy the runner its worth it

thanx, everyone, for your suggestions. You couldn't be more right, after looking through months of past postings there is an enormous amount of information here. I'm sure you will be hearing from me again. John

Hi guys - I've been lurking on the list for a while, But thought I'd jump in now. I've got a similar problem with my 95 4Runner, except the window will go up, but not down. The key will rotate properly in both directions, & the switch tests good in both directions with a continuity test. My guess is it's either faulty wiring, or a faulty door switch relay (Based on the wiring diagram in the Haynes manual). Anybody have any experience with the relay & where it might be located (I'm guessing the rear door along with all of the other window /lock mechanisms). Forthe time being I'm using my trusty exterior door opener/passenger seat cover to get the door open (Keeps me from having to get out ;-) ) Thanks- Bill
