For the last several months our 89 Tercel 5 speed has been jerking when acclerating when shifting gears, but no sputter so proably not the clutch. just replaced the fuel filter, the old one was full of fuel. After changing it it helped a little but it's still hesitating. The Vacuume does leak a little and the carb does need to be cleaned, I should try some carb cleaner. If it's a D.I.Y fix great, but if I have to take it in that's a problem since it's our only transportation at this time. What could it be, any ideas?

Hi, I dont know what kind of gas you use, but I had the same problem and just about ready to get a new carb and then I thought to change fuel. We have always run a 89 octane with 15% ethanol in our vehicles and in the 85 toyota it was causing sort of a vapor lock when the engine got warm. Started putting 87 or 91 octane with No ethanol and it solved the problem. In ours, there is a fuel line that runs along the head and that may be causing it. This might help
