Priusman: Package arrived today, and I am thankful for the handouts. Keep up the good work. As soon as the CC package is available, I will arrange for it to be installed on my Prius, without a doubt. If for no other reason, then to support your efforts in this project. (and I desperatly want Cruise Control installed that will be supported by Toyota.)

Larry M.MacFarland

Dealers tend to say the first thing the wind blows in. So can I not change my tires, stereo, seats, sunroof, brake pads, oil, light bulbs, or the other thousand items at an auto parts store?
Call your dealer rep and ask him to send you in writing the warranty info that excludes cruise control and/or an owner from performing work on his car.
Charlie

Three words. DON'T DO IT!!! (Cruise Control)

I call my deal rep. They said, if you tamper or retrofit cruise control your selves, it will affect or void your warranty. Or you can wait untill your warranty run out. Then you can do what you want to it. What do you think Priusman???

Our Dealership offers to install Cruise Control. We did install quite a few so far. The right way to do it is to install the appropriet steering wheel and the brake light switch. That way there is no tampering (cutting holes in lower steering cover, cutting thread into steering wheel, etc).
By replacing the steering wheel and the brake light switch the "up-grade" will be on a facotry level.

Thank you for the reply rdprius.

>>>Dealers tend to say the first thing the wind blows in. Why mess with a perfectly made car. My question to you is. Did you receive the free 2001 Owner?? manual? Please read it. I know that you can replace anything in your car and I know there is thousand of things you can change. WHY RISK IT! THINK SAFETY! Do you know that once you bring your car in for the service? Only an Authorized Master tech can touch the car. Even for an oil change. All the parts are cover under the warranty. accept for the wear and tear of the breaks and tires. Why not do it right the first time with out risking the warranty!

I agree, the Prius is not a space shuttel. However quite a few systems are very different from a conventional vehicel. Oviously the vehicle is designed to achive a good mix between safety, fuel efficency, performance, etc.
No matter what brand of vehicle we are talking about, each part is specificly designed for a specfic model.

The Dealer try's to stay on the safe side, and is just following Toyotas advise.

I saw a few vehicles returning from a Radio Shop for repairs after a radio insatllation. One Coralla even had a sheet metal screw driven into a Cruise Control ECU! Don't think Toyota Techs are perfect. However we set our level of quality and perfections very high.

Toyota will not void your warranty if you change a lightbulb. Not even if you change the tire brand or size. However if you return with a tirewear, handling, MPG complaynt or ride quality complaynt, you might have difficulties.

Same with the brake pads. Toyota can't prevent you from installing "Non-Toyota" pads. But they may reject your warranty request for noisy front brakes, exessivly worn rotors, etc. Lot of pad lining material out there is metalic, Toyota uses non metalic-pad material.
By the way, those pads will last a long time, with all the regenerative braking there is almost no wear of lining.

If you like to change a lightbulb your self, this will not void any warranty. But remember, this is a new vehicle, you should not have to do anything exept check the oil and fill up the tank every 500 miles.
You are also very limited with aftermarked radios. I don't think there is anything out there that will possibly fit. To me it seems there is no good reason to install any "Non-Toyota parts" into this vehicle.
An other thing is the High Voltage system. Without the Toyota Training I would deffinitly stay away from those vehicles. If anything goes wrong, it's not just a little arc from a 12V battery, good chanches you only make one misstake. Why would you expose somone else to this HV system and possibly risk his health or life.
