Hello my MR2 brothers...
The last couple of days have been a roller coaster ride for me and my car. This is my story...
I had waited 6 weeks for my TRD springs to be shipped from Japan and finally they came last week. I thought I was ordering stock height springs but much to my surprise the invoice said "SPRING SET LOWERI". Now we all know that our MKI's are already quite low, and the space between my wheel wells and tires is tiny. I began to worry.
I took my car to the garage on Monday and the mechanic (a consumate pro) worked on it for no less than 7 hours! It is an '86 and not totally rust free in the suspension department. I was delighted when I pulled into the lot and it wasn't sitting on it's tires. The car now has an agressive lowered stance and looks great. It was close but it looked like it might work.
I also had the guy install a set of kokeco high performance gas struts in front cause my car had a funny rattle when riding over washboard like road patches. Had is the key word...now things are different.
I drove the car home...OH MY GAWD! It is race car suspension pure and simple. I have almost no body roll and the handling is beyond what I have the balls to push. Still there were a couple of unpleasant scraping sounds on my trip and the ride is not for the cadillac lover.
I had read that overtightening the lug nuts on the front of these cars could cause warpage of the rotors and eventually a front end shimmy. I had this shimmy but the new struts completly got rid of this.
The next day after work I immediately went for a drive. (of course) The scraping sounds were happening more than I could stand and I realized that this car was definatly lower than it had been. The space between my wheel well and the top of my tire is about 1/2 of an inch. Even though the front end is really really tight, something was still scraping. After some investagation I realized that the tabs inside the well that hold the plastic insert were the culprit. I took out my top most two screws and bent these tabs back and wa la! My car never scraped again.
It was scary and full of trama, but I now have a lowered race car like driving machine. Taking turns at twice the posted speed is like childs play and all is well.
Thanks for reading my story.
-Mainsoda
