ok so i have a 1990 4cyl and the thermostat was sticking or what i thought anyways so the deal is that the gauge starts to climb pretty close to the hot and then goes back down to the normal temp so i was thinking ya its probably just a thermostat so i went to the parts store picked one up got it put back in and went for a drive and it does the same thing!!!! its not like it ever really gets to to close to overheating but i am ocd and just dont want it to be doing what it is doing. so is this a normal thing or what cause even with this brand new thermo there was no change.. any help or thoughts would be very appreciated. I had an old dodge that did the same thing. Are you noticing any coolant loss? Has all the air been purged from the cooling system? If the answer is yes to both of these you're looking at a possible intake gasket manifold leak or warped head. The dodge i had was a warped head. I havent heard anything like this in a toyota. this link may help.
