We have a 2004 4 runner and except for a transmission noise we do like it. Ever since we got it it makes a subtle thumping noise when we are stopped at a light or stop sign. The dealer keeps telling us that it is the drive shaft and a known problem without a permenant fix. When we take it in for service and tell them about it they grease the drive shaft and sometimes it goes away for a short while. Anyone else experience this?

It's pretty common among 4Runners and Tacos. Nothing you can do except what the dealer has already done.

It's not really a problem, but more of just how the drive line works. When the transmission shifts, it unloads and reloads pressure on the drive line. Everything has a little slop and it makes a clunk sound.

Went to another forum to ask this question and found out it is as simple as greasing the drive shaft.

The Lexus GX470 has the same problem, there is a fix for this most lexus dealers will not address the issue unless brought up by the customer. Lexus replaces some drive shaft componets and arms on the back of the truck, I do not know if toyota is as receptive to the service bullentin, they are the same truck mechanically, search the lexus groups and find more than you want to know about this subject
