Hey! I'm new here, I just bought an '88 Supra, no Turbo (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) The car has 107k miles, and the guy said he has not replaced the timing belt... ever. So thats the first thing on my list of stuff to do. I am in Auto 3 at my highschool, and I have replaced many timing belts, so I am not that concerned about it, I just wanted to know if anyone could give/tell me where to get a diagram of the routing for the belt. I just don't want to screw anything up ya know? Thanks for the help! BTW- Can I get a turbo kit for the non turbo 88 or would I have to make a custom turbo? If I had to go the custom route I would probably blow something out, I suck at math lol. --Borari

Its just like any other timing belt you can go ahead and replce the belt but your not going to get a turbo for a non turbo car.

The routing of the timing belt will be displayed when you remove the cover and look at the existing one. Or am I missing something here ?

Timing belts are pretty easy to install. Just make sure you check it for tension and make sure there is no oil on it. If you get oil on the timing belt it will soften and won't last long. I haven't heard of exchanging a non turbo for a turbo before but good luck on that.

G'day Tom; I can suggest this method: 1) Put your socket on the nut with a long bar (your 3' bar with maybe a piece of pipe to make it longer...) 2) Set it up so that the bar is against something SOLID like the ground, or a chassis rail 3) Double-check direction of rotation, socket on the nut square and firm... 4) Hit the starter v. briefly. 5) Robert's your father's brother... Have not tried this personally, but it has been used successfully by those I know. Good luck! Nathan in Oz... P.S. Sometime beforehand, try spraying with WD40 or similar to help loosen, and when reassembling use a little anti-seize, and the specified torque.

Just to reiterate, make sure you're undoing, not tightening the thing. Check which way the engine rotates, THINK about it... You are HOLDING the nut and TURNING the crank... Cheers, N.

I had to change a timing belt on a Toyota Celica a long time ago. People told me to do just what Nathan suggests. I resisted - I just had a problem with cranking an engine with equipment attached to the engine. After just about killing myself, I tried this method. Made sure it was set up the correct way, bumped the starter and presto! bolt was loose. Just double check your directions and do it. Works like a champ. Nathan Taylor

I have 98,000 and was wondering the same thing! The maintenance schedule always says check the thing - well it's still there! Has anyone changed one?

Sure you should have it changed.<br><br>I had a timing belt changed on mine at 70,000.<br>because i didnt want to void the warranty.<br>I also had a timing belt go out on my 84 300 zx<br>many years ago, and it was quite expensive, because i had to replace the engine, hate this to happen to a sc 400.

I am getting my timing belt done tomorrow actually. I think it would be fine for till 200,000Km (120,000 miles) but I don't want to risk my car stalling on me. To what I know I think the timing belt if it broke will not affect the engine, it will just cause the car to not run. My car is just 500km under 172,000 which is I guess 114,000 miles. I am also doing everything else that needs to be done, might as well while the whole car is opened up. I will tell you guys what my dealer says that my timing belt condition is in. Note when you do decide to do the timing belt it is a good idea to do the waterpump as well, since there is a lot of common labour.

Hmm not too sure but if the belt was that knackerd it might have accelerated some wear...BTW how much did MR T charge for the pleasure?, does she feel any better... also i going to have to wait till Sat to fit the motors properly, and for the record when the warning light comes on REV2WS no longer works, as a side note i was playing around wiv me plugs in the rear of the car last nite and I forgot to reconnect one and my rears stayed in opp phase even above 45, i could tell by the tighter turn in LOL Cheers Fergal Fintan

Mr. T talketh bollocks then... The 3S-GE is a non-interference engine. (Except of course Al's one which is extremely mysterious... hey.. wonder if Al. has aftermarket cams and doesn't know it...).   and 170 quid!!! Feck! Get the local garage down the road to do it. AFAICR I paid about 80 quid to get a new belt and have it fitted.   That's deliberate scaremongering on Mr. T's part...
