The problem is the tires, not the alignment. I've had all four replaced, two at 7500 service and two at 15,000 service, all under warranty. The reference on the service report was that the worn tires were "Old Style" which leads me to believe that Bridgestone had issues. My worn tires all had the same pattern: weakness on the sidewalls.

I was disappointed with the Firestone tires. A early flat was before 10k. I actually replaced just 1 tire. That tire was NOT the higher load. I only noticed this a few months later.

I actually lucked out. At 28k miles I brought it to attention that the tires wore out at the edges. The dealer sent it out to a alignment shop and they refused to do the alignment until tires were replaced. I haven't been back to that dealer.

Same week a different shop (my choosing) said the tires were ready to come apart. I decided to put on Michelins. Even if there wasn't a shortage of Prius Tires. I have 39k miles on now (10k on new tires) and no extremes of tire wear. I measured inner and outer tread with a caliper and no difference! :)

So I tried comparing Michelins vs. Firestone at 10k miles. There is no comparison. Michelins with lower load rating show no major problems. Firestone with higher load rating showed major wear and sidewall breakdown. Thanks Michelin.

Of course and naturally, it raises further questions:
Are you running the Michelin X-1 185/65R14?
Are you running them at higher than standard pressure?
What part of the country do you live in?
Driving conditions, freeway, country roads, city?

As the debate about tires moves along, it is good to get real world data.
Phxprius
13,800 with substantial wear on OEM?s

Energy MXV4 185/60 82H.
I actually ordered MXV4 (no Energy) but wanted the Energy tires. I was told the Energy didn't come in the 185/60 size. When I looked at them before installation, they were Energy. Less rolling resistance.

Running 40 psi.
San Jose Bay Area of California. 104 miles a day. Half Freeway half farm roads.

A correction, since Firestone bought Bridgestone I think of the OEM Bridestone tires made by Firestone. So the comparison was Bridgestone to Michelin.

Since the new tires I haven't reset the avg miles computer. 10,400 miles at 47.7 mpg.

coinprospector

Thanks for the response. Excellent mileage with the Michelins. The Energy MXV4 185/60 82H looks like another serious contender in the replacement tire category.
Side note, was it not Bridgestone that bought Firestone, thus Bridgestone/Firestone as the logo now. Kind of like Chrysler "merging" with Daimler only to find out that Daimler/Chrysler and its entire product line are now a German rather than an American company.

Phxprius
