Hello blokes

I tried posting before so if iv posted twice i apoligies

I have a toyota hiace 93 model 2.8 l diesel 3 L engine. I was doing a timing belt replacement as iv done this many times but i always mark each tooth position on each pully to timming belt so i can line up the marks on a swap.

One of the marks rubbed of and im confused to if im a tooth out on the crank. Does anyone know where the indicater marks on each pully should face (cam pully, fuel pum pully, crank pully) should face. I dont really want to turn the engine over until im confident iv got the timing belt sitting in the correct spot on each pully.

This old girl has done 330 000 and i just had to redo the pump as it was leaking as some of you would have had the same problem when they changed the fuel structure of the diesel (i think sulfer or lack of it or something)

I had the same problem in 2000 when they altered the diesel. I feel sorry for the people having to pay someone for the labour of fixing a pump when they leak each time the fuel companies do something with the fuel.

All the best Damien

Ok, the 2.8 is pretty straight forward to get right.

The cam pulley lines up with a mark that is at approx 6 o'clock (relative to the pulley) ie it's BELOW the pulley.
The injector pulley has an indent on the front face which lines up with a mark on the black plate behind - and the mark is above the pulley.
Same with the crank - the pulley has a groove notched in it OR an indent in it that lines up with a mark ABOVE the pulley (on the black plate).

I have discovered that the engine WILL in fact start even if the timing is 90° out! [I found this out by accident]. It doesn't start easily though - you need to give it some throttle and it doesn't pay to rev it as it makes some hideous noises [pistons hitting the valves] and it blows heaps of brown smoke.

So the idea is to line the marks up, then rotate the crank by hand (use a socket on the end of a bar) and do one full revolution of the crank and check the timing marks again. If they all still line up then you got it right and it should start and run.

Sometimes what can happen is as you put the belt on, you can be one tooth out. If you are, this will show after you've rotated the crank one full revolution.

My local public library has the manual for this engine - that's how I found out where the marks were. If you get really stuck, post back here and I will go get a copy of it for you.

Hello guys

Thankyou for your help. The marks on each pully that you recomended did work. I found by turning the injecter pump a few times by it self until one or two injecters spat out fuel made starting easier. Van runs smooth again and the pump is working great.

Once again thankyou all very much for your tips and offer of help.
