QUOTE
Toyota Motor on Monday said it sold 9% more vehicles in the January to March quarter than last year, giving the Japanese automaker the title of world's top automaker as its sales surpassed General Motors' for the first time.

According to a company spokesman, Toyota ™ sold 2.35 million vehicles. General Motors (GM) sold 2.26 million vehicles in the first quarter.

QUOTE
Toyota's been able to overtake General Motors by pushing hybrid technology at a time when Detroit was stacking up inventories of trucks and sport utility vehicles. With rising gasoline prices, consumers started buying the more fuel- efficient vehicles made by Toyota and other Japanese automakers.

GM and Ford Motor Co. (F) also have had their sales hurt by a desire to sell cars to rental agencies, as those sales are less profitable.

QUOTE
In March, Toyota's U.S. sales rose 11.7% to 242,675 vehicles, while GM's sales fell to 345,418 from 359,705. Ford's U.S. sales in March dropped to 264,975 cars from 291,146.

Its only the first quarter of the year, but I think we all pretty much knew it was only a matter of time.

They also have more recalls this year than anybody else. Something like 500k since Feb.

Ford still has Toyota beat in terms of recalls. Ford recalled 500,000 Escapes due to engine fires and 155,000 trucks and SUVs due to fires caused by the cruise control.

It was just a matter of time before it happened. That's what happen when you don't compete you lose and fall down the list.

Perhaps you need to go back to school and take math over again, because last time I checked, 655,000 is a higher number than 533,000. Ford is still in the lead in terms of recalls. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/s12.gif)

So the greatest quailty company(toyota) is competing with Ford for quality control issues? Come on I though japanese cars were built better than that. 500k by apr is nothing to be proud of.

This just in, honda passes Gm with 81,000 recalls. Thats the other japanese quailty company isnt it?

Im not saying GM is the great be all end all car company, Im just saying the whole Japanese quailty is ****. People think anything thats not american is automatically better for some stupid reason.

I think every car company goes through stages of recalls ...if there is a design or part flaw any where then it trickles down and makes for headaches. How much do you guys think recalls are about design or about manufacturing?

And while this is so true, American car companies are stuck with this sterotype while in all reality their build quality is up.

They are up, yes, but they still havent caught up with the Japanese. Build quality is much more than recalls. In my experience, Ford and GM cant compare to Toyota and Honda in terms of long-term durability.

Even if it were true(its not), who plans on keeping cars past 150k? Not the average buyer.

I own both Toyota and North American brands. Have both for 25 years.

I work on all aspects of vehicles.

It has been my experience that Japanese engineering makes working on vehicles easier. I have seen North American standards come up in the past 15 years, and you tend to get "more vehicle" for your money...yes.

However the tolerance bands that Toyota uses and their Quality Control System is still superior to North American brands. The US is catching up.

My Toyota has 320,000 kms and my Ford Taurus has the same. My Chrysler van is now at 210,000.
I keep records, and repair dollar per mile is lower for Toyota.

Consumer Reports supports my findings.

Best Regards,

I usually keep my vehicles untill the have 200,000 miles on them, assuming that nothing major fails (engine, tranny).
I know that a lot of people trade up for something new every few years, but there are also a lot of us who dont like having payments and when we get a vehicle that we like, we tend to keep it for as long as it isnt giving us problems.
I too have noticed that Japanese brands tend to age a lot more gracefully than American or European brands.

Well, I think its no wonder anymore why Toyota was able to overtake GM in Worldwide Sales. Toyota produce great cars. There's no question about that since we can see that Toyota has always been used in movies and commercials.

If repair and parts are easy, that counts for a lot. I've always owned mostly foreign cars and some of them have been a right pain to get repaired.

So far my experience has been favorable for toyota. I have a Chrysler as well, and things are just not the same. Great vehicle, but when they tell me I'm lucky my pads lasted 15k miles, and that my rotors warping(sp) is normal, it just makes me wonder.

I could warp a set of rotors in 1k if I drive like an asshat, and always ride the brakes. In fact you should see the rotors on my ss. In the front they have burn spots are warped and cracked, but slowing a 3300# car from 160 isnt the easiest task. But it sure is fun.
