yeah i read that too somewhere. (traction control prevents the front wheels from spinning faster than the rear wheels, e.g. on slippy roads).
i'll try that as soon as it snows here ;-).

(chuckling at Dianne) Why yes it does! It helps
keep the copious amounts of electric motor torque under control. ON a slick surface it would tend to spin out a lot more, I would think, than a traditional powertrain.
:)toyobri

I suppose it is the same in terms of components and how it functions (ABS sensors) What's different is that it's there more for the benefit of the car than the owner. With 260lb-ft I gotta figure that electric motor could really tear it up without a leash!! (sigh) Add a slick road and the problem would be compounded As for documentation...Im looking....

Dianne...check the Prius New Car Features manual, page 26, section 7 "Other Characteristics..." "o If a drive wheel slips on slippery terrain, causing the front wheels to spin faster than the rear wheels, the THS effects control to limit the slippage by restraining the drive force..."

Neat, huh?

Burns

Gotcha...and thanks for telling me where to find it!

To clarify this, because I know my product but I was confused because the THS controlling slippage using the drive force isn't my own version of skid/traction control. It makes sense that the THS doing this would be needed but in the "classic" sense, it's not engineered the same as the cars with the true "skid/traction" control like Sienna, Camry V6, or Avalon, etc.

Thanks a lot, Burns, for finding that for me. I will be certain to point that out to others as well!

Dianne

Brian...The NCF is a GREAT book. It is Pub. No. NCF182U, part number 02-000809-00 for the second printing.

It has explanations of most of the novel functions of the car at the "intelligent, curious, but non-expert" level.

For example, it has good explanations of the THS, including a "nomograph" to let you figure out the relationships between motor, engine, and generator speeds.

I ordered mine from the Toyota 800 number. About $35.

Burns
