Hey,

I am looking for some assistance from those of you here that may have significant knowledge/experience with these cars. Is it normal for a manual transmission in a Toyota Corolla CE to require replacement with 136,476 miles on it? The mechanic says that they can hear stuff banging around when it is up on the lift and has found a used replacement. With labor it would cost us about $1500 roughly.

The problem started last week with some screeching and then some banging in the car. When we slowed down, specifically when coming out of turns, it would pop out of gear. After sitting for several days, the car ran perfectly fine this morning when I drove it to the shop.

It is not that I am really skeptical of the mechanic, I just want to know if this is normal for the make/model. It seems like we are running into far more problems with this car than we did with a 1996 Hyundai Accent with a similar amount of miles on it. I had always thought that Toyota certainly made better cars than Hyundai, especially Hyundai models from 1996, but it doesn't seem to be ringing true now.

Thanks for any knowledge that can be shared.
