I have a 1998 Camry 4cyl. 2.2 auomatictranny ect..... Ok so recently I have changed my transmisson fluid and filter. There was absolutly nothing wrong with the tranny prior to this. I draind the pan and pulled the pan, I also took the plug off that is at the back of the tranny. I belive I have a A-140 transmission. This brings me to my first question..... That back plug, Is there a separate fill point on it? or does it fill back up on its own when the tranny is refilled? Ok well so after it was changed I was on a 300mile trip, And about 2hrs in the tranny started to make this noise. I plled over and looked underneath the car, and It had popped a relief valve for the fluid. Some fluid drained out but I checked it and it was a lil low but not to cause any problems. SO I took the car back to my garage and drained the fluid AGAIN, and dropped the pan to see if there was any metal shavings in the bottom of it. The only thing I notice was a small amount of metallic shavings, I mean very tiny particals at the bottom, and I did notice that the tranny fluid was kinda burnt. It was dark and had the burned smell like it had over heated when It made this sound. Needless to say, I put it back together and refilled the tranny agin with fluid and made sure that it was filled to proper levels and drove it around.. It still makes this noise. I am affraid to drive it now for fear of damaging the tranny if it isnt already fried. I dont know what caused this problem but maybe someone who reads this my know a lil about what might have happened. My guess is that at the rear of the tranny wehere i draind the second drain plug, thats where the cv shafts go into the tranny, It sounds like they arent being lubricated.... Oh yea and the noise, to describe it, It sounds like a steady zipping noise, that increases in sound the harder the tranny is used, upon coasting to a stop the sound dampins down and the car doesnt make a noise at a stand still.... The transmission shifts gears properly with out any hesitation or skipping. Its just this doggon noise. Can anyone help? Need tranny specialist !

I believe you have fried the differential, by removing the rear drain plug. No, the trans and diff are filled separately.

I have never been able to find the fill plug on the diff, and so far, have given up on looking for it. All the manuals I have show it to be on the backside of the diff case. If you can find it, try refilling; perhaps there is not too much damage.

A good rule of thumb is to remove the fill plug before you remove the drain plug!

Ok so it being on the tranny, It would NOT be filled by simply refilling the transmission after a fluid change... So the answer is to try and find where to refill the back plug. That seems to be a really good possibility, Thanks for the reply...... I will check and post my discoveries...

Oh yea and one thing, The diff is all one part of the transmission, so there would be 2 diffrent chambers? unusual..

SO here is an update.... I found the fill plug on the back and refilled the gear box. Unfortunatly I guess the damage was done cause i drove it for a week or so and the noise didnt go away. Finally one day th car totally made a nasty grinding sound and then bam I guess the cv axels are completely shot or pulled out or the gears in the gear box are screwed. I can even put it in park cause the car will still roll =( SO I wanted to know if there was a way to replace the inner gearbox gears or do i just want to replace the WHOLE tranny? what you guys think? I lean towards new/used tranny.
