Automatically locking out of OD when cold is a Toyota thing as I
discovered long ago with my Camry. I didn't know they did it on the
4Runners also and don't recall seeing it in the manual (which I did
read).
Funny to read this today. When I drove off this morning, I had frost
on the windows and the OAT was probably 40?F or less. I get on the
highway only a few miles from home so I wondered if my '99 4Runner, 6-
cyl whould keep me out of OD, but it did not. Maybe they only make
the 4-cyl models that way? Then again, it will only lock you out for
the first minute or two, before the temp gauge shows the engine fully
warmed. Maybe mine was warm enough before I reached the highway.
Anyway, relax and drive easy those first few cold miles until all the
fluids warm up and reach the proper viscosity to lubricate the moving
parts while they reach proper operating temperature. With any luck,
you will make it past 300,000. My '93 Camry, 4-cyl is almost there
at it has endured a hard, torturous life with this driver. By
comparison, I baby the 4Runner.
