To anyone; I have a ?72 FJ40 Toyota Landcrusier. It?s all stock, with a straight 6 and a manual 3 speed. The transmission is going and I want to put in a new 4 speed or 5 speed. I will eventually want to put in a new 6-cylinder engine. I would like to replace the transmission first, then when I get more cash replace the engine. How would you advise me in doing this? Cause if I first do the transmission is there only certain transmissions that will work? What about conversion kits? If I get a new engine will I have to get a new conversion kit? Would it be better to get the engine and transmission all at once keeping everything the same manufacturer? Roughly what will these cost me?
Thanks for your advice.

what a lot of people like to do is to mate a latter model 4-speed (Cruiser) tranny with the earlier 3-sp transfer (a transfer case that was originally mated to the 3-sp tranny). The 3-sp. transfer has lower gears in it, thus making the gear ratios a little better. What I would do in your situation is to save up and buy a newer (post '76) 2F motor at the same time as you buy (post '76) transmission. This will save you both time and money. As far as the cost goes, well, I suppose that all depends on what kind of deal you can score where you are. Hope that helps a little bit. For (a lot) more info on that sort of a thing go to http://lists.off-road.com/~tlca/ and check out the archives. You'll find more info there than you probably ever wanted to know. Take care,

-ben

Are you going to replace the engine with another 236 straight 6 (like stock)? Or something else? If you're certain you're going to replace the engine, I'd do the whole thing at once - make sure the (new) engine and transmission work together and swap them both out at once, instead of finding a new tranny to fit the current engine, and then trying to fit a new engine up to it.

Peace,
Jake
