what a lot of people like to do is to mate a
latter model 4-speed (Cruiser) tranny with the earlier
3-sp transfer (a transfer case that was originally
mated to the 3-sp tranny). The 3-sp. transfer has lower
gears in it, thus making the gear ratios a little
better. What I would do in your situation is to save up
and buy a newer (post '76) 2F motor at the same time
as you buy (post '76) transmission. This will save
you both time and money. As far as the cost goes,
well, I suppose that all depends on what kind of deal
you can score where you are. Hope that helps a little
bit. For (a lot) more info on that sort of a thing go
to http://lists.off-road.com/~tlca/ and check out
the archives. You'll find more info there than you
probably ever wanted to know. Take care,

-ben
