I recently bought a nice Turbo with mods.Having a 87 N/A, I'm not familiar with the turbo engine at all. My question for you now: I can hear a very strong air pressure release sound while driving her. It's definitely not the BOV sound !!! I think it did not hear it when I first got her but maybe I didn't pay attention. When I fist heard it it was a lot quieter and less pressure ( maybe I was driving a lot slower and more considerate ?! =) who knows ?! . Now its like a steam high pressure sound all the time that you can hear while driving. Here is what she's got so far: Greddy BOV K & N intake manual boost control C's short shifter 2 1/2 down pipe 3"' HKS after cat exhaust and other little stuff. Ok...... what am I not getting here or missing out on. Like I said I just bought the car and have no clue how it is supposed to sound and if that is normal so give me some input please. While you are at it....... What rpm let's the turbo perform best and what would be the average psi.? Can someone please explain it to me a little more detailed. I know how the regular turbo works but I have no idea how it changes with the mods and what I can expect to see and hear, driving her and looking at the gauges. Hey,...... what can I say .... I'm just a gal who never had a turbo before ! =) ( but now she does ha, ha. !!!) Thanks Trish Anyone out of NY area going to NOPI or the Import Showoff in PA on Sept. 26 ??????

Dear Tricia, I have a 90 supra turbo and an RX-7 turbo, so I've had my share of turbos. On my supra, I have A'PEXi cat back, K&N Akimoto racing filter, plug wires, Greddy BOV, and a turbo timer. When I got air intake my Supra made loud hissing sounds, not particularly at idle, but more during turbo spool. The air intake opens up the front impeller wheel on the turbo, so you can actually hear it compressing the air in the turbocharger. With a manual boost controller(which I really wouldn't use) the sound should be even louder if your boost is dialed above stock(about 6 pounds). Do you have an aftermarkeet boost guage? If not, I'd get one. And also a turbo timer. For your question on average PSI, You shouldn't go above 11 or 12 max unless you have the HKS 1.2mm head gasket because the stock gaskets have been known to blow with no mods at all. Manual boost control is bad because it doesn't adjust to your boost curve- it just holds back the wastegate longer so no boost gets cut off, but at the same time there is no more fuel being delivered than before. The best is an electronic boost control because it monitors your boost curve and some even have a cutoff if you are about to blow something or hit fuel cut, which REALLY sucks. So keeep the boost low and write back with any other questions. Rick, Age 17, Seattle >
