Dear Tricia,
I have a 90 supra turbo and an RX-7 turbo, so I've had my share of turbos.
On my supra, I have A'PEXi cat back, K&N Akimoto racing filter, plug wires,
Greddy BOV, and a turbo timer. When I got air intake my Supra made loud
hissing sounds, not particularly at idle, but more during turbo spool. The
air intake opens up the front impeller wheel on the turbo, so you can
actually hear it compressing the air in the turbocharger. With a manual
boost controller(which I really wouldn't use) the sound should be even
louder if your boost is dialed above stock(about 6 pounds). Do you have an
aftermarkeet boost guage? If not, I'd get one. And also a turbo timer.
For your question on average PSI, You shouldn't go above 11 or 12 max unless
you have the HKS 1.2mm head gasket because the stock gaskets have been known
to blow with no mods at all. Manual boost control is bad because it doesn't
adjust to your boost curve- it just holds back the wastegate longer so no
boost gets cut off, but at the same time there is no more fuel being
delivered than before. The best is an electronic boost control because it
monitors your boost curve and some even have a cutoff if you are about to
blow something or hit fuel cut, which REALLY sucks. So keeep the boost low
and write back with any other questions.
