Yes the CPS was 180 deg out.
Like I said, I marked it before I removed it and put it back the same.
When we bought the car it ran but not that well. maybe that was the
reason. That and the fact that it had been through a BHG and over
heated, worn so bad it needed to be bored 40 over. Also the crank
needed to be turned and both cams replaced. But the big reason the
person sold it was an intermittant knock. (a 8mm lock washer on top
of #5 piston) We knew the engine was going to need some money thrown
at it, and we threw plenty it seems.
One piece of advice I can offer to anyone overhauling a 7MGTE is to
be sure and replace or at least check the piston skirt coolers.
I beleive that low oil pressure at low rpm is what hurt the crank and
cams. The cams were real bad, I'm lucky I didn't have to replace the
whole head. I was checking the piston coolers to see if any were
plugged. What I found was that two of them had broken springs and
would pee oil even at low rpm, so less oil going to the head.
Thanks again for all the help.
I will keep checking the NG in case I can help someone else.
Happy Brad and even happier son.
