Well, unfortunately I'm not getting my car this week. I got the call from Toyota last week saying that my car had arrived in Long Beach and that I'd get it by today. Oh well, I hope to get it sometime next week. It only needs to go from Long Beach to Orange County...about a 25 minute drive. Probably just a delay in processing. (I did not order the CD player.)

Local dealer told me that they are required to keep and test the car for a day and half after it arrives at the dealership.

I called a few insurance companies in Southern Cal. to get some quotes (like AAA, Freeway, Eastwood, Dashers). Looks like AAA is the lowest at about a grand. Limits I requested are 100/300/50 liability and 1,000 deductibles for collsion and comp. I have no tickets or accidents and am between 30 and 40...male.

If anyone knows of a cheaper rate, please post.

>I got the call from Toyota last week saying that
>my car had arrived in Long Beach and that I'd get
>it by today. Oh well, I hope to get it sometime
>next week. It only needs to go from Long Beach to
>Orange County... about a 25 minute drive.

Just for comparison's sake: my Prius also came in via the Long Beach port and I live in Palms (not too far from Orange Country). There were exactly 7 days between when I received the call that the car had arrived in the Port and when I was able to take delivery at my dealership (in Carson) last night. So I suspect you should have yours very soon now!

>I called a few insurance companies in South Cal.
>to get some quotes (like AAA, Freeway, Eastwood,
>Dashers). Looks like AAA is the lowest at about a
>grand. Limits I requested are 100/300/50
>liability and 1,000 deductibles for collsion and
>comp. I have no tickets or accidents and am
>between 30 and 40...male.

I also am a male between 30&40 with no tickets or accidents. Unfortunately, the lowest insurance I could find was Geico at a cost of $753/6 months! YIKES! (my last car was only $300/6 months). I suspect the discrepancy is caused by my residential location (I don't live in the safest of areas and car breakins are rather commonplace).

-- Steve

I was quoted $544 for 6 months with $500 deductible or $566 for 6 months with a $100 deductible today by Farmers Insurance. Also, no accidents or tickets 30-40 age but I'm in Portland Oregon.

Also, my car is sitting on the dealer lot waiting for me to get the paperwork done, which looks like it'll be Monday now. But at least my wait is over!

PriusFan

Try Costco. A few years ago they cut, what I thought was the best rate I can get, in HALF. The quote I got, with similar limits to yours, being a 47 year old male in Santa Cruz with two cars, was $570/year!!! for the Prius.

"I called a few insurance companies in Southern Cal. to get some quotes (like AAA, Freeway, Eastwood, Dashers). Looks like AAA is the lowest at about a grand. I have no tickets or accidents
and am between 30 and 40...male."

1st thing, I would see about getting a single limit rather than the split limit (consider a single $350,000 limit if you can get it--it gives you basically the same coverage, but in sue-happy states like NJ & CA the single limit gives you more options when you have an accident, IMO. A $500,000 SL policy is even better, but you'll pay more for it, obviously.)

2nd thing-get the same quote with a lower comp. deductible--you'd be amazed, but the difference in premium between a $1000 comp deductible & a $100 deductible shouldn't be more than $50 or so. (Course, it's been a while since I did insurance in CA--but in Jersey, that's about what it would be on a Camry or similar vehicle.) That way, if you're in an accident that might affect your rates, you know you're responsible for the first $1000, which may make you drive a little more carefully. But if your car is stolen? Vandalized? Broken window? Catches fire? Is hit by an animal? Or a mudslide? I wouldn't want to have to put out $1000 for that!

You also might want to check CNA, they have a great policy, and with your age & experience the underwriting shouldn't be too horrible.

I don't know if Progressive writes in CA, but you might check their website, and I think GEICO does on-line quotes as well.

Beth
(NJ Independant Insurance agent) :)

Thanks for the reply, Beth. (Glad to get a reply from the Garden State. I was born in NJ, but like many others, moved to CA.) I will take your suggestions.

One more thing to follow up on my previous long posting about taking delivery of my Prius. (And sorry for the typos, I had to type fast. I meant to type that the touch-screen display shows MPG, not MPH.):

I was given 3 keys to the Prius, 2 masters and 1 that will do everything except open the trunk. I asked dealer for another key. She told me it would cost a whopping $150. I then changed my mind. I suggest putting one of your master keys in a safe deposit box. And if you do lose one of your master keys, you must dish out the $150 before you lose the second one, otherwise you'd have to spend thousands. Be careful, all! I know I will.

Beth,

I was born in Atlantic City and lived in Margate for 16 years. (BTW, I miss the subs at The White House and Tastykake. I do not miss the cold weather in the winter. Yes, I know, California has earthquakes!)

I called for some other quotes as you suggested. Believe it or not, AAA was the lowest at $985 per year. I've learned that this is a great rate and one that might be impossible to beat.

I signed with AAA.

I love the Prius and am happy I bought it (so far). Take care in NJ!
