Hi folks. I just joined, posted a picture of my car in the photo's section. Now I have a question for those of you who are mechanically minded.

My car is a 1986 twin turbo with a 2.0 liter inline 6 cyl. It may be a different engine than what was put in the models sent abroad, but Japan has a pretty stiff engine size/tax ratio so they make a lot of the cars with smaller engines for the domestic market. It's a pretty soild ride, and still has a lot of punch- not that there are many places to use that- but getting old by Japanese standards so I got it for just about a whopping 600 dollars US.

I've had this car for over a year and experienced only a few nuisance problems, (ex: the AC needed to be repaired) but nothing seriously engine related. I've noticed over time, that the engine seems to have a lot of valve noise. Not any kind of knocking or anything terrible, but just a loud vavle train, louder than I'd like. I rather think a vavle train should sound like a sewing machine, just a tiny bit of whirring and clicking going on, but never anything you actually notice. Unfortunately, I noticed this and now I find it irritating.

My question to you is: Just how much vavle train noise is a Supra supposed to make?

Hello tmkreutzer
When I purchased my 90 turbo I thought the valve noise loud but thats the way MKIII's are IMHO. (humble opinion]. Boy I might be in trouble this summer here in calif-I'm getting rid of my a/c to save weight. I noticed valve clearance on all my exhaust valves at 90K at max of 12K and lots were at 14K.I set them myself at 8K using crude home made tools from thick garden tools shaped with a sabre saw. one J tool and one sloted tool +-. vaves get looser w/time-some say tighter-don

Well Don, I notice that when the windows are down the noise isn't as noticable. The car has done it the whole time I've owned it, I think it might be kind of a natural thing with it, but still I wonder.

I'm sure my supra is a pretty strange car compared to the 50 staters. I'm not sure what they come with, but this thing has- no shit- a 2 liter inline 6, an automatic transmission with a performace, manual and economy setting to change it's shift program (that on all of them?) and is bone stock.

I bought it from a New Zelander who's wife received it as a gift from an old uncle.

If California is as hot as Kyoto, you're going to sweat your balls off in your car come summer. I hope you don;t spend much time stuck in traffic.
