It's been a very bad couple of weeks with the MR2. I went camping in the lakes a couple of weeks ago, car was playing up a little bit with the temperature gauge showing a bit of overheating now and then so I took it to the mechanic. I thought it was an air lock so I thought I'll get them to change it and bleed the system totally before I charge 100 miles up the M6. I asked if it was a possible head gasket so they did some tests on it. 10 litres of 'For life' later the car was happy and no evidence pointed to the head gasket. Coming home on Monday morning at 7:30am just getting to Lancaster services, the temperature gauge shoots into the red, straight onto the hard shoulder, coolant is bubbling out of the reservoir tank. Cool car down and limp to the services, call the AA. This is where the learning curve starts... I don't have 'relay' (I don't use the motorways often you see, Lesson 1 - you can't beat a motorway to find any problems). The AA man says, yes it looks like a head gasket, untold damage blah, blah! Basically he says "I can't tow you home, what are you going to do?". I filled the radiator again and drove home at 50mph, temp didn't budge from normal. Car booked in for head gasket. The day after car wouldn't start, out comes the AA again. Distributor gone. Need to tow car to the garage, I did that this afternoon - it's 4 miles away, nice and easy, so I thought. Crunch! the towing eye comes away from whatever it was attached to and makes a lovely mess of the front plastic bit, tearing it in the corner. Lesson 2 - don't use towing eyes, certainly not on a 15 year old car where rust may have set in.

That's about the size of it, I'll find out if it's really the distributor gone tomorrow, head gasket to be replaced in a few weeks. Front bumper, cosmetic damage really I was going to replace it with a newer one (like Chris's car) but wasn't expecting to just yet. Oh well, we live and learn.

Anyone got any ideas how much the head gasket's likely to be? I'm not asking Mr T to do it though. I'm guessing at around ?350?

Cheers

Steve
