A friend of mine has a mid 90s small Toyota pickup. The temperature gauge is not functioning and he's asked me to fix it. I figure the first step is to figure out exactly what type of vehicle it is. He keeps telling me that it's a blue truck. Somehow I'm thinking that's not good enough. At any rate, could someone tell me how I can look up the vehicle's information via the vin number (4tarn81a9rz309176).

Ask a Toyota dealer.

FWIW 95 and older is a mini, 96 up it's a Tacoma.

Actually, 95.5+ would be a Tacoma. Previous trucks are either called Hilux or just pickup trucks with no specific name.

After '95.5 they started calling them T100 or Tacoma. Before then, Toyota called them a "Pickup". No real name. A place like PepBoys that only deals with newer gets real confused. I sometimes just tell them 4Runner since I know they share some of the same parts as mine.

Pre Tacos are refrered to as minis in general by most.
Toyota dropped the Hilux name in the Us in the mid-70's.
Dealer should be able to handle the VIN regardless.
