The W55 trans came with the 22R Celicas years 78 to 81. They will fit the 20R motor but you do have to make some modifications. The shifter sits back further so you will have to cut back the floor opening for it an inch or two. The overall trans length is longer so you will have to shorten the drive shaft or you might be able to use the drive shaft from the newer Celica (RA40).

Yes they are much lighter because of the all aluminum housing.
But because of this they are not as strong as the W50 with the cast iron center section. So the W55 might not be the best trans for hard launch applications such as drag racing. The W50 is a rock crusher trans it can really take lots of abuse. You also might want to take into consideration that the W55 trans has different gear ratios over the W50.

Hey Rick! What's up?! Hope all is well!
Anyways, yes I agree with his comments here, just another thing I'd like to point out though...my brother's '76 Celica coupe GT is running a W55 transmisison with his 18RG. This is what's making be start looking around for one. There was no modification to his car necessary. The transmission mated right up except for one pin which was on the transmission housing and was pushed in. He has had this setup for about a decade now and no problems. He has gone through two clutches with this same transmission. primarily used for street and roadracing. I think the weight saving is worth the effort. Just my opinion guys! Thanks!

I have had one laying around for years but never got around to trying it. When you pick it up it seems like a feather compaired to the W50. What drive shaft did he wind up using?

Was he happy with the ratio as an improvement.
I think the W55 in generally a lower overall ration.

The reason why he first switched was 'cause his W50 started having a problem where it would pop out of 1st gear on it's own. So he switched to the W55 'cause he noticed it is much lighter. Surprisingly - there was no drive shaft change necessary! It all bolts right up to his 18RG and the Celica, no special mounts needed, no drilling or cutting - there is one unecessary pin which he says he just hammered in. the ratio works out perfect for the 18RG. That's why I'm going to do this too. the car is overall lighter and thus just better for a roadracer.

Hmm Actually, the W55 is MUCH stronter then the W50 the center plate is thicker then the w50 you will notice and most of the internals are also bigger as well, thats why W50's go for $300 ozzy $ and W55's go for $500ish and are put behind small block V8's

(first sign of geting the grunt your looking for is when the W50 input shaft and 2nd gear syncro start to complain :) also if your looking for a cheaper W55 theres a 4 Speed W45 in some 82 + coronas)

>Yes they are much lighter because of the all aluminum housing.
> But because of this they are not as strong as the W50 with the cast iron center
> section. Maybe things are different where you are at, but here in the U.S. if you are going to drag race an old Celica with a hopped up 20R motor with plenty of torque consistently for a full season, you better run a W50.

>Hmm Actually, the W55 is MUCH stronter then the
>W50 the center plate is thicker then the
>w50 you will notice and most of the internals are >also bigger as well, thats why W50's go
>for $300 ozzy $ and W55's go for $500ish and are >put behind small block V8's

Hmmm...lately I've started thinking about converting from the W50 trans. to the W55 again. I've been driving my Celica around during the past 2 months now. I need to go under and check out a minor leak underneath. I get a few drops every couple of weeks. Cannot tell what it is exactly, could be a engine oil pan bolt that needs tightening or well, can't tell yet but it seems to be coming from near the trans underneath the driver's side. ANyone have this? I haven't had any problems with the trans except for when it, very rarely, pops out of 4th, and I think it's driver's error. It does not usually do it but has done it on occasion and I think it's me not having driven the Celica lately until I fixed the intake leak. Drove it yesterday for a cruise. Check out the photos section for a pic I posted. Later group! El. Go CELICAs!

Got a chance to peek underneath for just a few minutes and it's coming from the transmission - I'll take a closer peak in few days when I can jack the Celica up and crawl underneath. I think it may just be a leaking plug but who knows. Looks like I get a few drops from where the driveshaft/trans. meet. But the unit is pretty dirty so we'll see after I look under there. El. Go CELICAs!

So, it's whenever I finish driving the Celica do I notice a leak underneath coming from the transmission. Looks like it's going to either be a stuck vent cap, which should be taken off and cleaned up. I'll do this firt to see if the leak re-occurs. If it does I'll replace the rear seal.

Am ordering the 33103k seal kit for the W50 trans. housing. That's where my leak is coming from. When I have time, I'd like to record all the microfiche screens and post 'em up. Nice since it has an explodd view of the parts and part #s.
