hi from new ziland,
i have a 91 hiace ( which is the next shape on from your 86 so it might have a different offset) and i put 16" steel rims on from a BA falcon complete with the 215 60 16 goodyear radials. mine originally had 14" with truck tyres. the change to car tyres transformed my ride and the ford branded hubcaps were a humourous, but temporary, addition- for a while i drove a ' Fordota' :)
i think the 2009 hiace has 16" rims ( about 1998 0r 2000 the hiace seemed to get an extra wheel stud and an extra inch of diameter) and then the latest shape hiace got a 16" rim.)
in my search for the ultimate steel wheel i investigated allsorts and came up with hilux,rav4(cant fit hubcaps), territory mag and falcon ;hilux from memory. 2 wheel drive, late model hilux came with 15" 5 stud steel rims( with tiny centre caps) and i see these on trademe( our local ebay) brand new for about $100 a set.
same goes for the BA falcon rims as people swap them out for a set of factory or aftermarket mags. these also have 114.3x5 and i think the offset is similar- i found the centre hole on the BA rims to be about 1mm too big( hiace had 67.1mm centre hole) and has no lip to mount the little tin cup of a hub cap on. but i fitted the rims anyway and had no problems. if you get any minor rubbing at full lock, it can be removed by undoing the locking nut on the stopper on the back of each front hub and winding out a few mm( 215's a lot wider than the original 185's).
this could all be a very expensive way to fit your hubcaps- personally i like gloss black steel rims- they do look good in 16". but the biggest advantage in 16" rims is have more freedom to choose a higher profile tyre to lower the motorway revs and get better highway fuel economy and a quieter ride- less screaming engine- if yours is anything like my 2litre petrol.
http://www.roversd1.nl/sd1web/wheelcalc.html. is a great online calculator as it includes diff ratios, speedo inacuracies and speed for given revs and tyre sizes; my original 14" truck tyres are pretty much the same diameter as the 215 60 16 replacements, but throwing on a 70 profile 225 has corrected my 4.3:1 diff to the eqivalent of a 3.9:1 diff. i think diff ratios were different on your model ( late 4's to low 5's i think ).
you might get some use out of this site that has wheel specs for lots of late model vehicles ( falcon is not included)http://www.alloyguide.com/home.php
Anyways, hope some of this might be helpful if you havnt sorted something already. any readers feel free to disagree as these are personal observations and i am just a hiace owner, not a mechanic :)
cheers and good luck
