I have been unable to find any information regarding the U.S. EPA ILEV stnadards. Is there really such a thing or just something made up by CA?

No, the CA Air Resources Board didn't make it up. There are hundreds of mentions of the US EPA's Inherently Low Emission Vehicle (ILEV) standard in federal law & regulation databases such as:
http://www.access.gpo.gov/nara/cfr/index.html#page1

... for example, "[2000] 40CFR88-- PART 88--CLEAN-FUEL VEHICLES":
<a href=http://frwebgate4.access.gpo.gov/cgi-bin/waisgate.cgi?WAISdocID=7943022065+\ 22+0+0&WAISaction=retrieve target=new>http://frwebgate4.access.gpo.gov/cgi-bin/waisgate.cgi?WAISdocID=79430\ 22065+22+0+ 0&WAISaction=retrieve

For more information, refer to the EPA's web site at:
http://www.epa.gov

Hope this helps.

- Peter

The paragraph that jumps out at me, the one that confuses me and sounds very much like double speak from the Ministry or Truth or from Animal Farm where all SULEV are equal but some are more equal than others is:

"Vehicles currently meeting the ARB?s Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle
(SULEV) standard offer extremely low emissions, the lowest for any
gasoline-powered vehicles. And while the Prius meets this standard, its emission contribution is also no better than any of the gasoline powered vehicles certified to this standard."

As to the ILEV business, I have read those government documents and managed to stay awake through most of them.

Bottom line is, while Uncle and CARB use whole forests to publish more regs and excuses, we are making a difference right now, today, with the Prius.

Prius - INVESTED IN THE FUTURE
