Finally located a gearbox for my 2litre 1983 Hiace... it's from a diesel of the same era, but they reckon it should fit fine. Does anyone know if they are compatible... or what geasrbox model I should be looking for (I can't see a code anywhere on the gearbox).

Not sure the would or wouldn't, but as the petrol van usualy works at
higher revs than a Diesel I would be doubtfull if the have the same ratios.
Please prove me wrong here as I am only guessing but going on the
ratios.....

Hello mate, with the gearbox ide suggest measuring the diametre and length of the first motion shaft and also counting the splines on its tip and comparing it with your petrol one.
Diesel first motion shafts are normally slightly longer but you may get away with it.Also the gear ratios may
be higher.
Years ago i fitted P100 deisel box onto a 2L pinto and had to lop about 15mm off it !!! this ended up in a svc Spectre kit car an it was stupidly quick.
Good luck

The bell housing *may* fit - but as already mentioned the gear ratios will be different - so you may need to change the diff or get different sized wheels.

Hi from Australia! I have just bought a brand new after market 5 speed gearbox for my 1991 Hiace Commuter 15 seat bus. The gearbox for the petrol and diesel models are identical. I am not sure if this helps your case or not. cheers Andrew
